UDAYAPUR, May 14: The prolonged drought has hit the maize planted in the district. Farmers here are worrying over the maize planted at the end of Chaitra.

UDAYAPUR, March 4: Lack of rainfall this winter has worried farmers growing maize in the hilly areas of Udayapur.

BAITADI, July 11: The rainfall coupled with storms has damaged the maize crop in various parts of Baitadi district.

KHOTANG, Oct 21: The outbreak of armyworm is seen in different places of Halesi Tuwachung Municipality in Khotang district where millet and paddy have been planted. Before this, the pest destroyed maize in the same municipality.

OKHALDHUNGA, Aug 8: Maize planted in 5,700 hectares of land in Okhaldhunga district has been damaged due to drought. The crop was damaged by the drought caused between mid-May to mid-July.

BANEPA, July 24: Nepal is yet to become self-reliant in maize production as the country continues to import, mostly from India, with an increasing trend for the last 10 years.

Maize and soybean are the principle crops for food and feed. Nepalis refer to them as Makai and Bhatmas respectively and makai-bhatmas is traditional tiffin commonly used in the hilly areas of Nepal. Besides, maze is used in many ways for food. Boiled corns, fried corn grains, grilled corns, popcorns, corn flakes are commonly found in Nepali kitchen. Thus corn could be consumed as a breakfast, lunch as well as dinner as there are many ways to cook and serve it.

KATHMANDU, Aug. 23: In a bid to increase the production and productivity of maize in the country, a training program on Hybrid Maize Comprehensive Technologies was organized to the experts, scientists, representatives of the seeds companies and stakeholders.

SARLAHI, April 29: Maize farmers of the district are in a big problem as the hybrid maize seeds did not give them expedited yields this season.

KAVREPALANCHOWK,  March 18: District Agriculture Development Office has started distribution of maize seeds to the farmers with the start of the farming season.
