KATHMANDU, April 10: Nepal is battling its worst forest fires in years, officials said on Friday, with smoke wafting across its mountains and souring the air as it settles into the bowl that holds capital city Kathmandu.
The Republic of Nepal is a mountainous country where the people have traditionally had a high reliance on forests for timber, fuelwood and non-wood forest products such as mushrooms and edible wild greens.
BANEPA, April 30: Gokul Bajagain, a farmer from Kakre village of Banepa, regrets his decade-old decision to conserve the forest. Back then, forest conservation felt like a very wise act. But now the number of wild animals in the forest have proliferated that the same forest has become a source of worry to him. , and he has no means to address the problem.
Family forests have played a lead role in economic transformation of Nepali farmers for decades. But slowly, this is getting replaced by various other forms of income generation and livelihood options. Majority of Nepali youths are in foreign land and others have migrated to city areas in search of opportunities and services.
GAIGHAT, March 17: Fire is reportedly taking place in various community forests in the Chure jungle in Triyuga municipality of Udayapur. Fire continues to rage the Triveni community forest and the Mothai community forest since the past few days.

ROME, July 19: Agriculture is the biggest driver of deforestation globally fueled by a growing demand for food, yet it is possible to feed the world without cutting forests, the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said on Monday.
