To do or not to do household chores

March 6, 2020 09:55 am

Chores—you can’t run from them. And yet, sadly, most still consider it to be a woman’s job. Men in the kitchen—cooking or doing the dishes—are ‘helping’ the women because they are the ‘providers’ and chores aren’t their ‘department’. Defying that very idea is one of the core notions of feminism. As Women’s day draws near and we prepare to celebrate how far we have come in terms of equality but how far we have yet to go, The Week talked to six men to find out what men today think of household responsibilities.

What started as a joke on Twitter about an unwritten rule among country radio stations not to play two female artists in a row prompted outrage by country music stars, but also pledges to give women equal airtime.

Why media must be free

November 5, 2019 01:30 am

Media deserve talk. In modern democratic dialogue, it has been customary to frequently debate over media quality, performance and related issues. Media freedom, media diversity and media equality are closely related terms in vogue. These three elements, when enhanced, add to the strength and quality of one another; they become the cornerstones not only of advanced media performance but also of a full-fledged democracy. As integral elements, they identify a democratic society in its true form. However, misunderstanding these elements will result in their misuse, with dire consequences beyond measurement.

Even a country whose half of the population comprised of women is not able to show their full potential in their respective work field. This has resulted women not being able to contribute toward the development of the country in full potential.

Capitalism and Dalits

According to Marxism, history is all about the struggle between bourgeois and proletariats, former seeking to enrich themselves, latter fighting for equality. The proletariats, Carl Marx believed, can liberate themselves only by intensifying class struggle to bring the revolutionary transformation in the society. In Hindu system, conflict happens between atheists and theists, Aryans and non-Aryans, feudal lords and landless, the ruler and the ruled, and higher castes and Dalits

In pursuit of equality

December 7, 2018 07:51 am

“Where do you see yourself in the list of empowered women?” – A casual question flung my way when my colleagues and I were gossiping over coffee. My instant reaction was somewhere at the top. I really felt like an “empowered woman”, especially when I compared myself with the general situation of women in Nepal and reminded myself of the fact that gender based violence and other heinous crimes like female feticide are still rampant in our country.

KATHMANDU, Dec 5: The main opposition Nepali Congress will accelerate ways to implement the policy to achieve economic growth based on equality as envisioned by NC founder leader B.P. Koirala, according to the NC's economic policy presented here on Wednesday.

Innovative take on gender equality

January 12, 2018 09:49 am

Rooting for equality comes through different actions and gestures. There is no right or wrong way to do it – you just do it. And equality in itself comes in different forms – gender, race, language, religion, convictions, belief, physical ability and so many more. And while many people voice their opinions on these issues and how inequality in any form hinders progress of societies and nations as a whole, only a few people actually do something about it. WoMen.co is a newly established café that promotes gender equality.

Equality in festivities

If mythology gave conflicting messages and depicted women as weak, men have been no better, always laying down rules for women to follow

The relationship between economic empowerment, often discussed in relation to employment and income, and gender equality is not straightforward. Increased access to employment and income for women does not readily translate into an improved status or bargaining power for women. Although involvement in economic activity is a necessary condition for the attainment of gender equality in the economic sphere, it is in itself not sufficient, partly because not all economic activity is empowering and additional measures are required to promote gender equality in other areas.

Nepal’s Female Labor Force Participation Rate is 80 percent. But women have a long way to go achieve gender equality

What is gender equality? Asking this question at a dinner party could bring the whole party to a screeching halt, as people start arguing about gender, pay equity, and why women do the majority of the child care. Your business can’t fix the world’s problems (and just what those problems are is debatable depending on whom you ask), but you can make your workplace a better place for everyone.
