KATHMANDU, July 28: A parliamentary committee has found that embankments in the flood-prone southern plains were constructed on the basis of access to the corridors of power rather than as per the need on the ground. This has led to flood risk in the settlements of economically deprived communities.

KANCHANPUR, Aug 20: The Shuklaphanta Municipality-4 in Kanchanpur district has constructed two embankments along two local rivers.

BANIYANI, Jhapa, Aug 3: The risk of riverbank erosion and flooding has been significantly reduced in Jhapa with the construction of embankments along the banks of Ratuwa river which flows through Gauradaha Municipality.

ITAHARI, Dec 27: Khadak Bahadur Bhujel, a flood victim from Itahari MuMunicipality0, is nowadays bothered with the absence of embankment in the nearby Budhi River. Four months ago, the same river had made him and dozen others homeless.

RAUTAHAT, August 21: Shiva Dayal Sah, 60, of Dohartol panics whenever clouds gather in the sky. He has withstood flood several times in his life. However, the recent one, the one that swept across most the Tarai region last Saturday, was the most devastating, he says. “As soon as there is a black cloud in the sky I feel like fleeing from here. I get very restless,” he said. “I fear if I could save my life again if my house is flooded again,” he added.
