Parents please don’t make a face just yet. This is a very important topic. When I start to talk for the rights of people with disability, I often get asked if someone in my family has some form of disability because I do not have any disability. Without my glasses, I would be one. Let us face it. Challenges to a person’s health can happen to anyone, at any age and at any time. Just remember those people impacted by the earthquake. They were abled people before. Now within a very short time they have become people with disability. Their lives have changed.

International Day of Sports for Development and Peace which was celebrated on April 6 this year offers an opportunity to reflect and introspect on the potentials of leveraging sports for the good of the society. The other day I was reading news about recent cases of racism across European football fields with more instances of verbal abuses against players just because of the colors of their skin. Sadly and unsurprisingly the targets were not only foreign players but also native players of diverse background, whose parents or grandparents had settled in Europe.

KATHMANDU, July 13: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) has put undue pressure on a doctor of the National Trauma Center to issue disability certificates even to those ex-Maoist fighters who are physically fit. MoHA is collecting the details of the ex-Maoist fighters disabled during the decade-long armed conflict in order to provide them monthly allowances. Up to Rs 12,000 will be provided monthly to each of the disabled Maoist fighters as allowance, according to MoHA.

The annual observance of International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3 in 1992. It aims to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of the society and development, and to increase awareness on the situation of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life, according to the United Nations (UN).
