International Dance Day is a global celebration of dance that was created by the main partner for the performing arts of UNESCO - the Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute (ITI). The day is celebrated annually on April 29, which happens to be the birth anniversary of Jean-Georges Noverre, the creator of modern ballet. The day aims to encourage participation and education in dance through events and festivals that are held all over the world.

KATHMANDU, Feb 21: Former King Gyanendra Shah and former Queen Komal Shah were seen dancing in a video clip which went viral on social media. The former royal couple showed their dance steps during the birthday celebration of former Queen Komal amid a function in Jhapa recently.

BHAKTAPUR, Jan 28: This year’s annual Nava Durga Gana dance officially began on January 15 in Bhaktapur. The festival runs for eight months and concludes on the day of Bhalbhal Astami in the Nepali month of Shrawan. The first day of the Nava Durga Gana dance was showcased at Suryamadhi, ward number 9, Bhaktapur. Nava Durga Gana dance is also known as Angalakegu, which means catching fish in Newari language. However, the dance does not include any act of fishing.

RASUWA, Oct 24: Locals of Rasuwa have taken initiative to revive a traditional dance of the Tamang community known as Syaba dance. As per the tradition, people of the Tamang community should perform the dance on the first Tuesday after Bhaitika every year. However, this dance was performed in Rasuwa after a hiatus of almost 40 years.

Lakheys are regarded as an Aaju Devata (the God of Peace) though they have a demon-like appearance. There are several kinds of Lakheys in the Newar community and these Lakheys are worshipped as gods because it is believed that they are the reincarnation of Lord Bhairav. It is also believed that Lakheys are the protector of the country and their dance performances protect the nation from evil spirits as well as diseases. The tradition of Lakhey dance dates back to more than 230 years ago. While most might believe that Lakheys and Lakhey dance only exist in the Kathmandu Valley, the tradition is spread across all Newar settlements in the country.
