Driving over the narrow streets of Kathmandu is not a piece of cake and encountering bunch of problems on the way isn’t an uncommon thing either. A town-centre bottleneck having a nine-mile traffic jam requires a significant amount of patience to keep the composure stable. Beyond that, 2 out of 10 lose their placidness and try overhauling the vehicles which ultimately makes traffic police crack up their sincere mentoring. Loud horns and blares of traffic make the road more distressing.

KATHMANDU, June 27: Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Raghubir Mahaseth has stated that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the construction of a tunnel in Koteshwor would be prepared within a year in view of reducing traffic congestion in one of the busiest thoroughfares of the Capital City- Koteshwor.

Clearing that congestion

For many, a stuffy nose has been this seasons’ most common health problem. Not only does it make breathing difficult but you also suffer from headaches due to it and getting a goodnight’s sleep becomes next to impossible. The Week consulted Dr Sahana Phuyal, otolaryngologist at Surya Polyclinic in Kathmandu, to find out some simple cures for this persistent problem. Here’s what she had to say.

SARLAHI, Feb 10: The famous vegetable market of Lalbandi which has been extended to the East-West Highway has been blamed for increased traffic congestion and accidents on the highway. From the early morning to late evening, the highway seems full of vehicles carrying huge loads of vegetables. Unfortunately, that has increased traffic congestion on the highway.

BIRGUNJ, Dec 16: Traders in Birgunj fear congestion at India’s Kolkata port again as there has been a delay in returning containers. Over a 1,000 containers are still waiting at Birgunj dry port and traders importing via third country say that this delay is likely to repeat congestion at the Kolkata port which had seen congestion for about three months from August to October.

BIRATNAGAR, Oct 26: A traffic congestion along the diversion road near Jogbani border has increased after the vehicular movement was banned to pass through the Mirgunj Bridge.

BIRGUNJ, Oct 24: Vessels have not been able to unload Nepal-bound cargoes at the Kolkata port thanks to port congestion. Freight forwarders say vessels have to wait a minimum of a week to 10 days to get their turn for unloading cargoes.

POKHARA, Sept 27: The traffic island at Prithvichowk of Pokhara has been removed overnight. The road department removed the island on Monday at 11 pm considering the growing problem of traffic jam at the square. Along with the island, statue of Lakhan Thapa has also been taken off from the island.

KATHMANDU, March 20: For the past few months, Yogesh Shrestha, a teacher known for his punctuality and promptness, has not been able reach school on time which has badly affected his class. Despite leaving home an hour earlier than usual, he still can't manage to reach the school on time due to heavy traffic jams which have become a daily routine these days.

KATHMANDU, Oct 7: As many as 11 people were killed in road accidents in the last 24 hours. With the growing road congestion due to the passengers heading back home for Dashain festival, the number of accidents has increased, police told Republica Online.
