KATHMANDU, July: 4 The citizenship certificate is the proof given to you by the state that you are a Nepali citizen. The constitution states that no Nepali citizen shall be deprived of the right to acquire citizenship. Yet, thousands of Nepali citizens have not received their citizenship certificates. It is not yet clear when the government will provide citizenship certificates to these citizens by drafting the necessary laws.

Nepal is a very liberal country in terms of recognizing and providing rights to sexual and gender minorities. While many countries around the world are on denial on the existence of these populations in their countries, constitution of Nepal has impressively recognized the rights of Sexual and Gender Minority (SGM) as fundamental rights. Nepal currently acknowledges its transgender community by allowing a third category of ‘others’ (meaning gender other than male or female) on passports, citizenship certificates, electoral rolls and immigration forms. Despite being liberal in recognizing and providing rights to this population, there are many issues that are being overlooked.

KATHMANDU, Dec 11: Amid concerns that hundreds of thousands of people, including those of Nepali origin, living in north-eastern India could be rendered stateless under India’s Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) and National Register of Citizens (NRC), Indian Union Home Minister Amit Shah said Nepalis will continue to be able to easily acquire citizenship certificates in India on the basis of the 1950 Peace and Friendship Treaty reached between the two countries.

BAITADI, Dec 9: A mobile camp of government officials has been set up at Shivanath rural municipality of Talloswarad, a remote part of the district, to distribute citizenship certificates.
