KATHMANDU, Dec 8: After holding the by-elections successful, the Election Commission (EC) is gearing up to hold election of the National Assembly (NA), the upper house of the bicameral federal parliament, which will soon be bidding farewell to one third of its members in accordance with the constitutional provision.
The results of by-elections held for 52 vacant positions on Saturday have been out. The poll results do not show major change in the strength of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) and the main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) than the mandate they had secured in the 2017 elections. But it has sent a significant message to all the parties who contested in these elections. Of the total 52 seats, NCP candidates have won in more than 50 percent seats while opposition Nepali Congress is trailing behind.
The by-elections for the 52 vacant positions of different political representatives including one for the House of Representatives, three for provincial assemblies and 48 at local units were held in the country on Saturday. The by-polls were largely peaceful. Voter turnout, too was enthusiastic. Republica photojournalists captured the by-polls moments at different places through their lenses.
