Yomari Punhi is one of the important festivals of Newa community. In order to pass on the Yomari culture to the new generation, we have taught Miss Newa to make Yomari every year and the tradition continues this year as well.
The Newa community celebrates many feasts and festivals, and one of them is Yomari Punhi. The full moon day of December is celebrated as the Yomari Punhi by the Newas of Kathmandu Valley which is also called Dhanya Purnima or the harvest full moon day.
KATHMANDU, Dec 30: Chairperson of the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) Dahal-Nepal faction, Pushpa Kamal Dahal has said that Nepal has been established as a country with its own original cultural traditions.
Traditionally, Yomari is a sweet delicacy (stuffed with Chaku and Sesame seed) cooked in the Newah community to celebrate Yomari Punhi that falls on the full moon day of Thinla, the second month of the Newari calendar. The festival usually falls in November/December and this year it has fallen on December 30. Yomari which is translated as a favorite bread item is not only a comfort food but is also nutritious which helps to keep one warm. So, it’s an apt food for winter.
Although Nepal is called a Hindu Kingdom, it is also home to different ethnic groups. Different ethnic people have decorated this land with a number of cultural traditions. Among them, the Newar community of Kathmandu celebrates many feasts and festivals. One of them is Yomari Punhi.
