BAGLUNG, Sept 27: In the wake of the Dashain festival, the traders have brought Chyangras - mountain goats - from Mustang. The markets in Baglung, Parbat and the vicinity witnessed the arrival of mountain goats.

KATHMANDU, Sept 8: The goods that are being imported to Nepal for Dashain festival are stranded in the Tibet region for weeks.

GORKHA, July 12: The Nepal Army has handed over an 18 km stretch of the ‘11 Kilo Chhepetar Bhaluswara Barpak Road Project’ of Benighat-Arughat-Larkebhanjyang Road. The section from Dharche Rural Municipality-7 Hawadanda to Ward No. 3 Dobhan was handed over to the project office on Monday, said Binod Bhatta, technical officer of Nepal Army.

KATHMANDU, Sept 25: The government of China has decided to allow as many as 20 trucks to enter Nepal on a daily basis from the Tatopani border checkpoint. An agreement to this effect was reached between Nawraj Dhakal, the Nepali Consul General Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous Region of China, and officers of the People’s Government of Tibet.

Tibet was a good market for Nepali traders and Nepal had good ties with Tibet. With marriage of Nepali princess Bhrikuti with King Tsroang Chong Gympo of Tibet, diplomatic and official relations became cordial. Following that many Nepali merchants and officials also married Tibetan girls. Eventually, Tibet and Nepal had both people-to-people and government-to-government ties.

SINDHUPALCHOWK, Sept 30: Sheep and mountain goats from Tatopani, a major border point of the north, have started entering Nepal for Dashain and Tihar festivals. The sheep were transported to Nepal from Tibet as soon as the border opened after a week’s shutdown. A total of 1,100 sheep and mountain goats were brought to Tatopani in a day on Friday.

A forgotten history

After Dalai Lama fled to India, Chinese security operation started in Tibet in 1971 and some Khampas started to settle down in the adjoining areas of the Himalayan border on the northern region of Nepal. They started to operate anti-China activities from Nepali territory, which was against foreign policy of Nepal. So Nepal launched military operations against Khampas. Many of them were killed, others fled and some surrendered. This episode is known as ‘Khampa Disarming Mission’ in Nepal’s military history.

An English version ‘Reply from Tibet’ by Dharma Ratna Yami was released on Tuesday at the premises of Nepal Tourism Board in Bhrikuti Mandap. Prof Timila Yami Thapa, the author’s daughter, journalist Supriya Manandhar, Prof Abhi Subedi and Dr Keshav Man Shakya jointly released the book.

NEW DELHI, Jan 22: The Centre has begun final negotiations to buy Russia-built S-400 Triumf air defence missile systems for Rs 39,000 crore, The Times of India reported on Monday. According to the report, the government wants to operationalise the deal by the end of FY2018-19. If the deal is inked, it will be one of the biggest arms contract with Russia, added the report.
