SURKHET, May 31: As the entire human community is being affected by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Raute community has been able to avoid the infection from the virus as not a single case of COVID-19 infection has been detected among Raute people living in Surkhet.
The number of infected patients at the hospital is surging every day. The demand for oxygen from the patients has not been met despite the hospital supplying some amount from the private hospitals and clinics. Doctors warn that the patients will die due to the lack of oxygen if the authorities fail to make adequate supply in the next two or three days.
SURKHET, Oct 8: Top Bahadur Kadayat from a remote village of Surkhet saved over one million rupees this year by selling ginger, turmeric and potatoes. He attributes this success to the newly-constructed roads that have connected his village to the main markets in his home district and beyond.
SURKHET, July 18: A coronavirus-infected man who was beaten severely by a police officer in Surkhet has been taken to a hospital five days after the incident, and his medical reports show that the patient has severe injuries in his right hand and has to undergo a surgery.

SURKHET, April 27: Dinesh Rawal, a resident of Sidhhakumakh Rural Municipality in Salyan district runs an agriculture farm in Panchapuri Municipality-9, Bijuma in the western part of Surkhet. A 10+2 graduate, Rawal has taken 40 ropanis of land on lease for vegetable farming. Eighteen local people have been employed at the farm where green vegetables including tomatoes, green chilis, pumpkins, cabbage, and cucumbers are ready to be picked and supplied to the market.
SURKHET, March 13: A person has been arrested by the District Police Office, Surkhet on the charge of practising medicine without a license. The alleged is Dipendra Kafle associated with the Subhalaxmi Hospital. He is accused of using other's medical council registration number to impersonate himself as a medical practitioner.
SURKHET, Feb 20: Nepal Rastriya Primary School in western Surkhet that once had around 10 bighas of land of its own is now shrunk to a small plot. While there is not enough space left even for students to play, the earlier open area is now fully occupied by infrastructures, vegetable and crop farms. In 2006, some locals had decided to give the public land they had been using to the school located at Chyurikhet at Panchapuri Municipality–2, making it one of the spacious schools in the district. According to the school's Principal Dil Bahadur Gharti, the school is now struggling to recover the land.
SURKHET, Jan 28: A youth died after he was run over by a tipper near Gautam Chowk at Birendranagar Municipality-3 today. Police identified the victim as 21-year-old Keshar Bahadur Singh of Simkhet, Mahabai rural municipality-3 in Kalikot district.
SURKHET, Jan 19: On May 29, 2015 an agreement was signed between the Municipal Development Committee, Surkhet and Sushil Raj Sharma, to lease out one and half katha land and a house for 10 years with monthly rent of Rs 20,000. According to the committee officials, Sharma has so far paid only Rs 340,000 whereas his outstanding dues stand at Rs 780,000.
SURKHET, Jan 16: The Karnali State Development Council is holding its maiden meeting this January 24 to solicit suggestions for the State's development and prosperity. Chief Minister of the Karnali State government Mahendra Bahadur Shahi will chair the meeting.
SURKHET, Jan 16: Once a beautiful lake covering an area of 12 hectares in the middle of a dense jungle, Baraha Lake of Surkhet has turned into a pasture after drying up. Provincial government of Karnali has prepared a master plan to restore the lost glory of the lake.
SURKHET, Jan 13: A province-level gemstone processing centre is to be set up in Surkhet. The federal government has made preparations for establishing such a centre for mining and processing of precious and semi-precious gemstones found in Karnali.
BIRENDRANAGAR, Dec 18: While many farmers are forced to use substandard wheat seeds due to unavailability of quality seeds, improved seeds developed by Agriculture Knowledge Center, Surkhet, is not finding buyers.
KATHMANDU, Dec 2: Dipendra Karki of Surkhet has bagged ‘Krishi Tara Award’. The award provided jointly by the Embassy of Israel and Avsar foundation – an NGO initiated by Khetan Family – aims at honoring deserving Nepali farmers or agri-entrepreneurs contributing in agriculture sector through use of innovations, technologies and skills learnt in Israel under ‘Learn and Earn Program’. The award carrying a purse of Rs 500,000 and a certificate was handed over to Karki amid a ceremony held on Thursday.
SURKHET, Nov 22: Police have arrested a person on the charge of being involved in fraud impersonating police officer in Surkhet. The arrestee was found being involved in smuggling of motorcycles impersonating police officer.
SURKHET, Aug 31: When Krishna Prasad Kharel of Birendranagar–14 was about to open his eatery located at Katkuwa Chowk of Surkhet–Dailekh road section on Friday morning, he noticed many dead and injured cows around. It was just 5 am and he informed the district police office, Surkhet immediately.
JAJARKOT, Aug 28: Three persons lost their lives and 25 others got injured as the bus (Na 4 Kha 9317) bound to Nepalgunj from Jajarkot skidded some one hundred metres off the road at Bheriganga municipality-5, Harremod, Surkhet along Ratna Highway at 3:30 am on Wednesday.

SURKHET, Aug 25: Jagat Bhul, 15, does not go to school when it rains heavily. When the monsoon is at its peak, his routine gets disturbed. A local of Ranga village of Kailali, Bhul cannot attend classes even other times if the weather is not fine. Bad weather means risks added to an already perilous journey to the school.

Water woes have made their life troublesome, they lament. However, even in this situation, this provincial capital of Karnali has not seen any slowdown or brake in the expansion of concrete settlements. The town's population grown has been constant.
SURKHET, April 30: Five years after being displaced by the ravaging flood of 2014, the victims of Surkhet will finally receive the first tranche of grant for the reconstruction of their houses on Tuesday.
Karnali Province government is planning to distribute Rs 150,000 as the first tranche to the victims from Tuesday.
RARA, March 28: A woman who had been facing problems giving birth since the past three days was airlifted from Khatyad rural municipality, in the western region of the district. Lalita Thapa,22, of Thamlekha in ward no. 8 of the rural municipality was airlifted by a Nepali Army helicopter to the regional hospital in Surkhet today.

SURKHET, Feb 24: Five years ago, Shambhu Prasad Chaurasiya, the then District Forest Officer (DFO) of Surkhet reached Nalkhola Community Forest to meet Rautes, the last nomadic tribe of Nepal. When he urged the leader of the community Mahin Bahadur Shahi to start agriculture, take up jobs and send their children to school, Shahi said to him, "You become a Raute like us, we will become commoners like you."
SURKHET, Jan 24: The Karnali province has started the construction of two fully equipped police posts in two border points with China. The police posts will be set up in Hilsa of Humla and Dhomorilla of Dolpa within a year, according to the provincial minister for internal affairs and law, Naresh Bhandari.
