UDAYAPUR, Dec 24: Udayapur police have confiscated a significant quantity of sugar and tobacco during an attempted illegal import. A team from Belsrot Police Station, situated in Katari Municipality-1 at the western border of the district, intercepted 40 sacks of sugar and eight sacks of tobacco destined for illegal import.

KAVREPALANCHOWK, Dec 6: A team deployed from the Area Police Office, Mangaltar, has confiscated 33 sacks of sugar which had been brought in by evading tax. According to the police, 33 sacks of 50 kg (1650 kg) of sugar were seized in the passenger bus BA PRA 03-001 KHA 1966 this morning at the police check post under the BP highway located in Roshi Rural Municipality-9 of Kavrepalanchowk.

For more than two weeks sugarcane farmers from Tarai staged protests in Kathmandu against mill owners until the government signed a deal to address all their concerns on Friday. The farmers, who provide raw materials for sugar by selling which the mill owners make huge profits, have not been paid for years. In fact, getting the payment for their products has been a long ordeal for them.  They staged protests in their respective districts and drew the attention of the district authorities too.
