Ruffling on Religion: Mission or Fashion?

Being the only Hindu state, Nepal enjoyed the love of all Hindus across the world. There was no religious confrontation. Outer respect, love and gratitude were high. Now the outer respect has faded and internal confrontation is rife.

Anyone can practice their faith but to push or impose your faith and beliefs on others especially those who are unable to defend themselves is a blow under the belt. Local and indigenous traditions need to be preserved, protected and all people empowered to practice their faiths, religious customs and beliefs without shame or guilt. People should also be empowered to bring about any change that is required in their faith, but that is not the intention of missionaries. Their aim is to only highlight the harmful traditional practices in the community, and hide the evil traditions of the church.

Religion is the highest flight of human consciousness. It has been central element in defining relations between humans, non-sentient life forms and inanimate objects in society. Different set of rights and obligations flow from different types of relations and as far as humans and animals go, this relation is mostly of domination and subordination leading to a vigorous system of rights but a frail set of obligations toward animals, making animal marginalization a theme of common occurrence in the anthropocentric reality.

Brought up in a Brahmin family, I have experienced different practices done by girls in the name of religion and culture. Among those practices the most common and  unwanted  is that of treating a girl during her menstruation. A girl being physically weak in those 4 days of month has to face not only those cramps and pains but has to confront situations of being addressed as   ‘impure’.
