KATHMANDU, Dec 21: Sarita Koirala of Chandragiri Municipality commutes to work on a public vehicle. Though Koirala follows all health safety protocols to stay safe from COVID-19, she fears that she might get infected from the public vehicles not following the safety measures.
KATHMANDU, Aug 27: Neeti Khadka*, an undergraduate student, had a horrible experience inside a public bus last year. She was on her way home from college, and a man in his 40s touched her from behind. Both were standing in a crowded bus, heading to Thankot from New Bus Park. He inched closer, wanting to rub his body against hers, as his hands were moving over her shoulder, trying to reach her chest. She tried to push him off but he wouldn't care. She was in tears, and did not know how to react. He started touching her sensitive parts. A woman intervened after a few minutes.
KATHMANDU, July 15: After almost four months of nationwide lockdown enforced by the government to curb the spread of COVID-19, a few public transportation companies have resumed transportation services in Kathmandu Valley.
Sajha Yatayat, a cooperative public transportation organization established in 1961 to provide efficient and affordable public transportation services to the people in Kathmandu Valley, evokes pleasant memories among all those who have used it. Sajha was timely and affordable, which is why when the people had to travel outside of the valley they would first choose Sajha over other services. And it ran pretty well until the mid 1980s. Then came the 1990s. Politicization, entered Sajha too, like in other public sectors, and coupled with mismanagement, Nepal’s exemplary public transportation system suffered its end. Therefore, when Sajha resumed its service eight years ago, there was a sense of excitement among commuters. In few years since its resumption of service, Sajha has become popular again. Sajha has set an example in Nepal’s public transportation sector. Few other private bus services have tried to emulate Sajha.
KATHMANDU, Nov 25: In May, the government had made commitment to increase insurance coverage of passengers and provide third party insurance for public transportation. But it is a commitment that, like many others, needs to be fulfilled.
