KATHMANDU, Nov 13: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has expressed the belief that festivals including Tihar have an important role in preparing the ideological, political, economic and cultural basis of socialism while protecting and strengthening the changed political system.

When political party-affiliated fraternal organizations of government salarymen, professors, lawyers, doctors, engineers, journalists, school teachers are kept intact, and no one says a word against it, thus politically corrupting every organ of society, will the present system improve just if the ‘top leaders’ retire?

Tuesday's meeting of top leaders of the major political parties at Singha Durbar brought to light a growing concern that the attempt to sow chaos and disorder in the country has been on the rise. Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who convened the meeting, expressed his apprehension regarding the increasing influence of anti-republican elements capitalizing on the mounting discontent among the population towards the current political system.

The Byawastha-Awastha Hypothesis

There is a simmering debate in Nepali politics that in spite of so much change in the political system (byawastha), there is little or no change in the living conditions (awastha) of the masses. This is what I call the Byawastha-Awastha hypothesis.

Dear Kathmandu, people’s perceptions toward you have been gradually changing with the changes in the political system of Nepal. The capital of Nepal only is not enough to describe your greatness. People attempt to define your existence according to their experience on your lap. The loud voices of happiness and anguish, content and discontent, respect and hatred, inspiration and frustration these days are not uncommon in Kathmandu. And, yes, you’re being both blessed and cursed for everything.
