While talking about our conditions on mental health status, Article 35 of the Constitution of Nepal prescribes only about the physical health of citizens, not about the conditions of mental health issues. As mental health-related policy, plans and strategy were incorporated in the 2019 National Health Policy, the 1996 Mental Health Policy was automatically cancelled.

KATHMANDU, Dec 10: Statistics from the Nepal Police Headquarters reveal that 35 police personnel, including staff up to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) level, have tragically committed suicide over the past seven years.

The Constitution of Nepal, 2015 ensures every person’s right to live with dignity and right to health as fundamental rights. Nepal's Health Policy 2076 also seems to have accepted the importance of mental health from the state level by having a vision that all Nepali citizens will be physically, mentally, socially and emotionally healthy and be able to live a productive and quality life.

POKHARA, Aug 20 (RSS): It has been a year since a 23-year-old woman of Pokhara Sub-metropolitan City-25 got married. The woman, who is now pursuing her MA, is planning her pregnancy only after completing her studies. But she fears that using contraceptives may lead to “infertility”. “I am afraid that sometimes friends would say that using temporary means of family planning before a baby is born will make it difficult to conceive. I heard that contraceptives may lead to infertility,” she said.

KATHMANDU, Sept 11: The number of people commiting suicide inside the country follwing the COVID-19 pandemic has increased, according to a government study. As many as 7,117 people committed suicide in the fiscal year 2020/2021. The number was 6,241 in 2019/2020 and 5,754 in 2018/2019.

Although clinical depression can be cured by psychiatrists, I personally believe depression cannot be cured by another person or chemical substances. It can be minimized to an extent but complete cure is certainly not possible as it involves someone's thought patterns.

Driving away fear from children

In the eyes of a child, the world can be a scary place. Young children are afraid of many things, and parents have a difficult time identifying and addressing them. Reassuring children of their safety is often a challenge too. For that, parents need to understand their children better and also know the reason for their insecurities. Primary school-age children's common fears could be both real and imaginary. It is natural for them to be afraid of things they do not understand or cannot control. Often children are insecure because they are still learning to cope with their feelings, as early as two to three years of age. As children grow, factors that trigger their fear also change.

According to a survey conducted during this period of lockdown, suicide cases in Nepal have gone up by 20 percent. The number of suicides in the first month was 487 which went up to 1227 by day 74 of the lockdown. The number comes up to about 16.5 cases of suicide per day compared to 15.8 a day in all last year!

The year 2020 is expected to be the year with the worst mental health outcomes largely because of COVID-19, the quarantine, and the loneliness after the loss of loved ones.

KATHMANDU, July 5: A 31-years-old man from Rolpa committed suicide during his home quarantine on Wednesday. A native of Ramdev Rural municipality-5, Avan Sarki, had returned home from Dubai on June 24 and was at home quarantine, alone at a home of his relative as India returned workers refused to allow him to stay with them at a quarantine center run by the local government. He was tested RTD negative while returning home.

Sushant Singh Rajput, the Bollywood actor, is no more and the news of his suicide is unfortunate. His last Instagram post was a collage of his mother along with his picture, which he captioned it poetically, ‘Blurred past evaporating from teardrops, unending dreams carving an arc of smile and a fleeting life, negotiating between the two...Maa.’

Anger management in children

Anger is usually a response to danger. It is also a form of self-expression, and sometimes, a way for children to show their independence. For little children, it is also a cry for help. During the lockdown, schools are closed and children are at home. They are not able to go out and play or interact with their friends. This causes frustration in children, resulting in aggressive behavior. There are plenty of other reasons for young children to be angry about it.

No Health without the Mental Health

This is just an example of a suicide case, which has increased by a significant number after the government enforced a nationwide lockdown on March 24.

Om “A-U-M” is a universal hymn. Our existence revolves around the cosmic ground and it is evolving every day, but if we stay still and focused, we can almost hear a silent hum like vibrating sound in the form of “OM” coming from far corners of the universe itself. The real form of sound transpires from its echo. The echo of sound has an original and native word which is known as omkar. Om has three syllables. The origin of om is a-u-m. The ‘aah’ from om is found while pronouncing ‘ka’ or ‘Kha’ simply, it is found in most of the consonants. Hence, the letter ‘aah’ is also known as Akshar Braham.

It is not an understatement to say that the COVID-19 virus has changed the world. The whole world is in panic and disorder right now. The fact that we don’t know when this will come to an end is even scarier to contemplate. The majority of the countries across the globe are in lockdown. People are told to stay indoors to minimize the spread of the coronavirus as much as possible. Being in lockdown might seem unsettling for the majority of people right now, but I am used to it. I have been on mental and physical lockdown for the last four and a half years. However, I am still fighting to not let the lockdown lock my life down.

Binod BK, 30, explains that being a transman in Nepal is challenging. Hailing from Syangja, one of the rural districts of Nepal, Binod’s childhood was smeared in stigma and discrimination from his family, friends, and society. “I knew from the very beginning that even though I was born as a girl, I felt like a man.” In school, Binod was mercilessly bullied because of his choice. He shares, “Girls were required to wear skirts, and tie a ponytail, but I opted to wear pants. It was my way of telling the world that I felt like a boy. But, my classmates didn’t get me.”
