Tihar festival begins from today

KATHMANDU, Nov 11: Tihar, the second largest festival of Nepali Hindus, is beginning from today. Also known as Yam Panchak, the festival is observed for five days.

KATHMANDU, Oct 23: As part of Tihar festival, Kaag Tihar is being celebrated today as the first day of the five-day long festival. The day is observed by offering food to the crow. The crow is regarded as the messenger of Yamaraj, the Hindu god of death and justice.

Tihar is at the doorstep. It is the second biggest Nepali festival after Dashain. Crow is worshipped on Kaag Tihar, the first of the five-day-long festival. Dogs get special treatment on the second day, called Kukur Tihar. On the third day (Gai Tihar), people show their appreciation to cow by garlanding and feeding them. In the evening, Laxmi, the goddess of wealth, is worshiped by lighting oil lamps (Diyo).
