PARIS – The small landlocked Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, which lies between China and India, is not only a tourist mecca. The country has also long pioneered the concept of “gross national happiness” (GNH), which its architects regard as far more comprehensive and accurate than the conventional measure of an economy, gross national product, or GNP.

KATHMANDU, Sept 12: The government's desire to measure happiness is moving at a slow pace due to the lack of homework and planning. The government has declared to conduct an integrated happiness survey this year in line with its slogan of “Prosperous Nepal and Happy Nepali” and budget was allocated for the ongoing fiscal year. A steering committee and another technical committee are to be formed to begin the work.

Love for little things

August 30, 2019 10:29 am

For me, a truly happy day is when I’ve taken a warm shower, put on a cute pair of socks, there’s soft jazz playing low on speakers and I’m curled up with a good book. This is when I tell myself that I’m glad to be alive. Sure, there are those moments in our life, like getting a job you always wanted or acing a test that you struggled with, which make us ecstatic but that subtle, long-lasting feel good always comes from appreciating the little things.

The shots of happiness

Living in the now

June 21, 2019 08:30 am

Every day in the evening a group of children come out to play in my colony. They scream, they laugh, they jump, and are all really, really happy. I often sit in my balcony, sipping tea, and look at them. I find myself smiling and there’s a sense of calm that takes over.

I wish you could understand it earlier That life is not meant to stay unproductive even for mere bargainer It will take away your opportunities You might pause and regret of not doing your duties

Somewhere or the other we as a human have been harassed, bullied, assaulted within our lives that had certainly left a negative impact in our mind, heart and soul.

Value relationships in life

April 7, 2019 14:45 pm

Most of us think and believe in having more money and other materialistic things in life can make us happy and satisfied. However, I believe this thinking is one of the biggest mistakes we make in our life. Nevertheless, it might be correct to some extent. And if it is the whole truth, then we might not see many people having everything but being in grief and alone.

My happiness mantra

January 18, 2019 11:10 am

As we grow older we come to realize that life isn’t a unicorn ride through a rainbow. It throws a lot of choices, decisions, and dilemmas our way and so it can sometimes feel quite calamitous at times. And thus we need and have our own coping mechanisms, a small comfort to fall back on. Rakshya Khadka quizzed a few people on what makes them happy when not everything is going their way. Here’s what they had to say:

Choosing happiness

December 21, 2018 09:15 am

KATHMANDU, Dec 21: I’m an inherently rude person. I think I take after my mother who has never been afraid to call a spade a spade. In our locality, she is known for her bluntness and she is proud of it. When I was growing up, I always saw her standing up for what she thought was right. She wasn’t the one to talk her way out of things and still isn’t. She believes in saying sorry when she is wrong but you really want to get out of her way when she’s right. She’s not having any of your nonsense.

WHAT BRINGS HAPPINESS?

May 7, 2018 09:03 am

Everybody wants to live a happy life in this material world. It is obvious that people think they could be happy when they become wealthy. But, wealth can’t buy happiness. Kin Hubbard had once said – It is pretty hard to tell what does bring happiness since poverty and wealth have both failed. Let’s look into the following story.

The pursuit of happiness

April 27, 2018 08:48 am

Everyone wants to be happy. But happiness is an elusive concept. Philosophers and psychologists have long sought to define it but there is no way to actually pin it down. More than simply just positive mood, happiness is a state of wellbeing that encompasses living a good life, with a sense of meaning and satisfaction.

The life of Dambar Bahadur Moktan follows the famous line from Nepal’s great poet Laxmi Prasad Devkota -- Saag Ra Sisno Khayeko Besa Anandi Manale, which means one is better off being satisfied even with little resources.

Finding happiness

August 11, 2017 12:59 pm

The first rays of the sun, the sound of birds chirping, or a cup of good coffee, there are little things that manage to cheer us up no matter how jam packed our schedule is for that day or how difficult the day has been. But, often times, we get so caught up in things that we fail to count our blessings and be happy. The Week’s Swasti Gautam & Ashma Chhetri had a few people name the three things that make them happy on a daily basis. Their answers might make you grateful for the very same things in your life or have you thinking about your little sources of happiness. Either way, our mission will have been accomplished.

SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS

August 3, 2017 13:36 pm

The statements are heard, in most common places, almost everywhere, maybe shouting or asking the liberality about the platitudes of our success. It often comes to us through the people that surround us. And then it begins the act of pleasing all but yourself, for the sake of not being considered as purposeless.

Happiness as my path

August 2, 2017 12:20 pm

Life was paused between happiness and success To find the way, I was restless. Those days, I had a crush Uncertain reasons made me hush. Heart broke like a mirror And left some track without any direction. To know the way, I tried very well In mind those pieces of mirror, I was in hell. And the day arrived, I feel about a thing Thinking for that track, I proved direction was nothing To join my heart, I followed the path: happiness Forgetting the past, I dragged myself forward.
