SURKHET, Oct 16: As many as 10,714 people have been rendered homeless due to the recent floods and landslides in Karnali Province. The Karnali Province Police Office, Surkhet, stated that the largest number, i.e. 5,282 people have become homeless due to the natural disasters in Mugu, followed by 1,763 in Kalikot district, 1725 in Jumla, 639 in Salyan, 566 in Surkhet, 474 in Humla, 207 in Dailekh, 25 in Dolpa, 18 in Jajarkot and 15 in Rukum West.

MANMA, Oct 13: As many as 1,500 houses were damaged by landslides and floods triggered by incessant rainfall  in the past few days.

TIKAPUR, Oct 12: Nearly 700 families have been displaced due to floods triggered by incessant rain in Tikapur Municipality, Kailali district. Similarly, 36 families have been displaced in neighboring Janaki Rural Municipality.

PARBAT, Sept 24: The Lower Modi-1 Hydropower Project in Parbat district that was damaged by floods on September 2 is yet to resume power generation.

KATHMANDU, Sept 6: The Darkhola Hydropower Project II located in Dhaulagiri Rural Municipality-2 in Myagdi district has been swept away by the flood. The canal and the powerhouse of the hydropower project, which is capable of producing 42 KW, has been swept away due to the flood that occurred on Sunday night.

SINDHUPALCHOWK, August 29: The Helambu Highway has been obstructed again due to continuous rainfall and landslides. Police informed Republica that the road has been blocked by a landslide which occurred at Fatakshila Ratopaharo of Melamchi-Zero Kilo, Melamchi Municipality-13.

TIKAPUR, August 27: The ward office of Tikapur Municipality-7 has issued a notice and appealed to local residents to remain alert as the embankment in Shahipur has collapsed. The ward office has warned the people stating that floods could come anytime.

KATHMANDU, August 2: The resumption of Melamchi drinking water supply to Kathmandu Valley has fallen uncertain as the massive flood on Sunday caused further damages in the infrastructures of the Melamchi Drinking Water Project.

With the monsoon each year in South Asia comes the danger of floods. Communities in the Himalayan foothills brace for impact, with floods wiping away infrastructure, causing landslides, and resulting in loss of lives and livelihoods.

Nepal is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change. Major climate stressors here are rising temperatures, increased floods, landslides and droughts. All major rivers, the agricultural lifelines, receive freshwater supply from melting snows and glaciers, and seasonal monsoon rainfall. Changes in the length, intensity and the amount of water flow in these river systems will adversely affect the population, eco-systems and biodiversity. Situation will be dire for majority of Nepal’s population who live in rural areas and survive on small-scale agriculture.

The river flows through several parts of Saptari district in Nepal, and it also touches villages of Bihar, India. KATHMANDU, July 27: Amid calls from lawmakers to raise the issue of floods and inundation in the Tarai diplomatically with the Indian side, Foreign Minister Pradeep Kumar Gyawali has said that the issues of floods caused due to the illegal structures built by India would be an important agenda for discussion during the upcoming Joint Commission meeting.

Monsoons in Nepal are a bit like the Hollywood film, Groundhog Day. The basic narrative of the film is that a weatherman finds himself reliving the same day over and over again. In our case, it’s us reliving the monsoons in exactly the same manner – year after year, after frustrating year. The monsoon brings with it a deluge in more ways than one – not only in the form of floods and landslides but a steady stream of bad news as accidents and weather related tragedies and stories of displacement unfold in various parts of the country.

KATHMANDU, July 17: Kaveli Corridor Transmission line and other transmission lines in Province 1 have been affected by the monsoon floods. However, electricity interrupted in the areas due to floods will be resumed from tomorrow.
