TRIPOLI, Sept 28: The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Wednesday highlighted the humanitarian needs in eastern Libya hit by recent deadly floods.

SINDHUPALCHOWK, Aug 27:  Helambu Rural Municipality has requested assistance from the provincial government after the floods in the Melamchi River caused more damage than expected. Informing Republica about the damage caused by the floods and landslides, the rural municipality’s Chairman Nima Galzen Sherpa requested the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Planning under the Bagmati Province Government for assistance.

KATHMANDU, Aug 25: Due to the risk of floods in the rainy season, the Melamchi water supply project remains closed since mid-June, deepening the water supply crisis in the Kathmandu Valley. Even though there is water everywhere in the Kathmandu Valley as it has been raining for the past several days causing flooding of rivers and unorganized drainage, the residents of the valley are facing a shortage of safe drinking water.

DHORPATAN, Aug 21: More than Rs 15 million have been recovered from the floods in Kagbeni, Mustang. Local residents, security personnel, and bank employees discovered the money while clearing the debris on Sunday.

MYAGDI, Aug 14: A massive flood that occurred at Baragung Muktichhetra rural municipality-4, Kagbeni in Mustang on Sunday evening swept away 10 houses, police posts and a bridge.

SIMKOT, July 30: Two villages in Sarkegad Rural Municipality in Humla district are at high risk of floods and landslides due to the incessant rainfall since three weeks. Ripa at Sarkegad Rural Municipality-2 is at the risk of landslide while Rahadeu which falls in Ward No 8 of the same rural municipality is at the risk of both floods and landslides.

SEOUL, South Korea, July 16: South Korean rescue workers pulled seven bodies from a flooded tunnel where around 15 vehicles were trapped in muddy water, as days of heavy rain triggered flash floods and landslides and destroyed homes across the country. Flooding and landslides have killed at least 33 people in Korea and forced thousands to evacuate, officials said Sunday.

The Karnali Province Police Office, Surkhet, stated that the largest number, i.e. 5,282 people have become homeless due to the natural disasters in Mugu, followed by 1,763 in Kalikot district, 1725 in Jumla, 639 in Salyan, 566 in Surkhet, 474 in Humla, 207 in Dailekh, 25 in Dolpa, 18 in Jajarkot and 15 in Rukum West.

MANMA, Oct 13: As many as 1,500 houses were damaged by landslides and floods triggered by incessant rainfall  in the past few days.

TIKAPUR, Oct 12: Nearly 700 families have been displaced due to floods triggered by incessant rain in Tikapur Municipality, Kailali district. Similarly, 36 families have been displaced in neighboring Janaki Rural Municipality.

SURKHET, Oct 12: Death toll in the floods and landslides triggered by recent rains has reached 33 in Karnali Province.

JUMLA, Oct 12: Floods and landslides triggered by incessant rainfall for the past one week have claimed 10 lives in Jumla. One person is still missing, Chief District Officer Mukesh Kumar Keshari said.

PARBAT, Sept 24: The Lower Modi-1 Hydropower Project in Parbat district that was damaged by floods on September 2 is yet to resume power generation.

KATHMANDU, Sept 6: The Darkhola Hydropower Project II located in Dhaulagiri Rural Municipality-2 in Myagdi district has been swept away by the flood. The canal and the powerhouse of the hydropower project, which is capable of producing 42 KW, has been swept away due to the flood that occurred on Sunday night.

SINDHUPALCHOWK, August 29: The Helambu Highway has been obstructed again due to continuous rainfall and landslides. Police informed Republica that the road has been blocked by a landslide which occurred at Fatakshila Ratopaharo of Melamchi-Zero Kilo, Melamchi Municipality-13.

TIKAPUR, August 27: The ward office of Tikapur Municipality-7 has issued a notice and appealed to local residents to remain alert as the embankment in Shahipur has collapsed. The ward office has warned the people stating that floods could come anytime.

KATHMANDU, August 2: The resumption of Melamchi drinking water supply to Kathmandu Valley has fallen uncertain as the massive flood on Sunday caused further damages in the infrastructures of the Melamchi Drinking Water Project.

The approach of controlling floods and landslides is being carried out continuously, however gaps between research, government agencies, and local people’s expectations are legitimate reasons for facing yearly losses in the disaster-prone areas.

POKHARA, July 1: Two persons lost their lives in Tanahun after a house collapsed following a landslide caused by continuous rainfall in the region on Wednesday night. The natural disaster has blocked the Prithvi Highway and has destroyed houses and crops at various places as well.

With the monsoon each year in South Asia comes the danger of floods. Communities in the Himalayan foothills brace for impact, with floods wiping away infrastructure, causing landslides, and resulting in loss of lives and livelihoods.

Nepal is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change. Major climate stressors here are rising temperatures, increased floods, landslides and droughts. All major rivers, the agricultural lifelines, receive freshwater supply from melting snows and glaciers, and seasonal monsoon rainfall. Changes in the length, intensity and the amount of water flow in these river systems will adversely affect the population, eco-systems and biodiversity. Situation will be dire for majority of Nepal’s population who live in rural areas and survive on small-scale agriculture.

RAJBIRAJ, Jan 24: Water is hardly seen in Khado River except during the monsoon. During rainy days, it swells and floods wreak havoc in the nearby villages time and again. The river flows through several parts of Saptari district in Nepal, and it also touches villages of Bihar, India. It is the responsibility of the authorities of both the countries to free people of the fears of floods and ensure their safety. Locals say, ‘nobody’ is however concerned over their plights.

Nepal’s Tarai plains have always suffered—from floods and inundation during the rainy months, from heat wave during summer and from cold wave during winter months. In almost all the cases people from the low-income bracket—such as Dalits and marginalized communities—have to bear the brunt.  It is no different this winter.
