LONDON, Oct 1: In a recent virtual mental health public awareness program, healthcare professionals raised alarms about the growing crisis of suicide and depression in the non-resident Nepali (NRN) community. The event, organized by the Health Committee under the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) in collaboration with NRNA Belgium, shed light on the escalating mental health challenges faced by Nepalis living abroad.

SYDNEY: Australia is now the first country to allow psychiatrists to prescribe certain psychedelic substances to patients with depression or post-traumatic stress disorder.

Although clinical depression can be cured by psychiatrists, I personally believe depression cannot be cured by another person or chemical substances. It can be minimized to an extent but complete cure is certainly not possible as it involves someone's thought patterns.

NEW YORK – The shock to the global economy from COVID-19 has been both faster and more severe than the 2008 global financial crisis (GFC) and even the Great Depression. In those two previous episodes, stock markets collapsed by 50 percent or more, credit markets froze up, massive bankruptcies followed, unemployment rates soared above 10 percent, and GDP contracted at an annualized rate of 10 percent or more. But all of this took around three years to play out. In the current crisis, similarly dire macroeconomic and financial outcomes have materialized in three weeks.

Normalizing mental health issues

Mental health is one of the least prioritized areas in the health care sector of Nepal. There is one major national psychiatric hospital in Kathmandu run by the Nepal Government, and other smaller psychiatry units in various hospitals. A few civil society organizations run programs and clinics providing mental health care, with a focus on raising awareness and giving counseling and support for access to medical care.

In late 2016, I was travelling in some remote villages of Zimbabwe to interview women living with depression and HIV/AIDS. Most of the women were either widowed or divorced as a result of the conflict and HIV/AIDS. Despite their dual burden of disease and social isolation, their happiness and entrepreneurial spirit was amazing, an inspiring takeaway for me. I had spent two weeks talking hours upon hours with different groups about their struggles with depression and HIV/AIDS. In one conversation, a middle-aged woman asked me, “Does depression exist in your country?”
