When the news emerged that a Chinese doctor, who had warned his colleagues about an emerging virus, was reprimanded by the Chinese authorities, the West went into a tizzy. The media was quick to criticize China’s handling of the coronavirus outbreak and how its authoritarian government’s desperate attempt to conceal it had led to the outbreak to reach unprecedented level. Many commented that the steps China was taking, including locking down of an entire city of 11 million and forcing million others to stay indoors, was extreme and ‘draconian’.

It’s more than a month since the outbreak of coronavirus in China.  Death toll is rising, over 800 as of this writing, and more than 35,000 people have been infected so far. Coronavirus outbreak has sent panic across the globe. Meanwhile, many Nepali students and citizens in China have not been able to return home. The videos of these students making appeal to the government of Nepal for making arrangement for their journey back home have gone viral on social media. The government has been criticized for failing to bring them back. As many as 180 Nepali students are learned to have responded to a call by the Nepali Embassy in Beijing for arrangements to return home. Sadly, the government has not been able to bring them back as yet.

In an open letter to the Prime Minister published on Sunday, chief editor of Naya Patrika Krishna Jwala Devkota has written about the distress his sister, brother-in-law and their young child are facing in the epicenter of coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan. According to him, his sister and some other Nepali citizens from China call him time and again asking for help because they believe that he could communicate their concerns to authorities in Nepal.
