The then US President Richard Nixon’s attempt to dash communism and a complete ban on marijuana in the 1970s, wrecked a Himalayan hippie Shangri-La in Nepal. Two years after President Nixon announced an international ‘war on drugs,’ Vice President Spiro Agnew visited Nepal. Months later, Nepal enacted the first anti-drug laws.

Madan Bhandari is one politician of the Left on whom there has been significant discussion in the mainstream polity of Nepal. And yet, one feels that the narrative is inadequate. Despite all that has been written and said, the very fact that that he led a communist party makes academicians and writers hesitate to properly locate his contributions in Nepal’s 70 years of democratic struggle.

Almost 32 years after the first communist state of the Soviet Union was declared in 1917 and right before the birth of the Communist State in China in October 1949, Nepal’s first communist party was declared in September 1949.  Thereafter, multiple communist parties have been born and their meandering paths and their divergent ideological stands have triggered an ever more complex iteration.
