KATHMANDU, April 12: A talk program was hosted by Nepal Junior Red Cross Society (JRRCS) in the auditorium of Nepal Commerce Campus (NCC), Minbhawan, on April 9.

The President of JRCCS, Yadav Shrestha, inaugurated the program with a short speech on how JRRCS was playing a role in raising awareness about climate change. He also emphasized that the new constitution would have an important role in forming mitigation and adaptation policies.

The opening speech was followed by presentations by climate experts Dipesh Chapagain of Nepali Youth for Climate Action (NYCA) and Nagmindra Dahal of National Trust for Nature Conservation.

The presentations were made on the problems that the country is facing, its role in dealing with the international climate change crisis, a road map to move ahead post-Copenhagen summit and the role of youth in dealing with this crisis.

"This talk program is different than others especially because this is done for the students of commerce and management," said Nilam Adhikari, Secretary of Youth Red Cross Circle.

Usually, students of commerce and management are engaged in mathematics and accounting. However, giving them knowledge on such hot issues is also important, added Adhikari. Climate change is a burning issue that affects everyone.

The presentations were followed by a brief question-answer session. The experts were asked questions by a very enthusiastic group of students. There were around 200 participants, all of whom were students of NCC.

Among the different comments, one particular student expressed his views on how climate change must be focused on by not just science students. Rather, climate change is an issue for everyone and its awareness must cross borders and barriers.

The organizers expect to host similar events in the future and spread more awareness on such issues. After the presentations, Dipesh of NYCA also announced the applications open for the 2nd Nepali Youth Summit on climate change, which starts from April 16 and concludes on April 19.
