Calling out the generation next to follow their dreams to be an achiever are five young, successful and motivated youths who have made a mark in different fields in 2010. [break]
In this edition of chitchat we feature Deepak Maharjan, 26, Sadichha Shrestha, 20, Hemant Rana, 26, Sanjeev Maharjan, 27, and Jyoti Shrestha, 23.
"Success does not come easy and you definitely have to work hard for it," says singer Hemant Rana. Sports was Hemant´s initial love, but one thing lead to another and music became his final calling. "I struggled a lot when I started and my family wasn´t really happy about me singing in lounges. But as a singer, I enjoyed on-the-spot clappings," adds Hemant.
However, for Miss Nepal 2010, Sadichha Shrestha, success was a dream come true overnight. "I always watched Miss Nepal on television and I loved the way the winners waved their hands after they were crowned. An overwhelming emotion swept me as I was crowned," shares Sadichha. She always had support from her parents. In fact, she was surprised when her parents brought the application form for Miss Nepal immediately after her intermediate exams. Her dad went to submit the form himself. "I am lucky to have gotten that kind of support from my parents," sighs the Miss Nepal.
For boxer Deepak Maharjan, it was his childhood dream to be recognized internationally in the field of sports. "I used to hit and box people if they misbehaved," recalls Deepak, adding, "My parents and relatives thought I could be a perfect candidate for boxing and then gradually everything began to fall in place." Finally, their prediction turned out to be true as this year at the Asian Games he won a bronze medal for Nepal in boxing.
The ladder up for Sanjeev Maharjan, a visual artist, was quite an experience. He says that people would take him as a hippie sitting outside a temple sketching from seven in the morning. "We had to sketch for our school´s project work and we used to work really hard which didn´t go down well with the people who mocked our effort," recollects Sanjeev laughingly.
Jyoti Shrestha remembers crying with her mom during her training sessions to be a VJ at Image Channel. "It was so difficult during the training that I used to cry with my mom. But now I am content with my job," says Jyoti.
Success definitely does not come easily, especially, in the field of sports because the country does not support your effort and you end up spending a lot of your money," says Deepak. He paid all the bills and had to discontinue his education as he trained himself to be a boxer who could compete at an international level.
Achievements don´t come easy. You have to love what you´re doing to be a winner. “Love your job and respect it," says Jyoti, to which Sanjeev adds, "With the achievement comes responsibility because others begin to look up to you for motivation.” Hemant and Jyoti echo the sentiment. "People believe what we say and that´s serious responsibility," says Jyoti.
For Sadichha, being crowned Miss Nepal was an exciting moment. But she had to shoulder a lot of responsibilities. She is now the ambassador for WWF Nepal and for Cancer Relief Society, and with her education, more could come her way to keep her on her toes every day. "I like taking things one at a time and I believe in living life to the fullest," she says.
As one of the few successful sportsmen in Nepal, Deepak thinks he has huge responsibility too. "Bringing youth to take part in sports activities and training them to become winners in future is not a joking matter considering the way the sports sector is handled by the state," opines Deepak.
None of our young achievers thought they would have made it in their respective fields had their participation not been out of real interest and enthusiasm. "You need to have passion for something and things will fall into place," shares Sadicchha.
Heman Rana, Singer
Never give up on things. Work hard on something, success is bound to follow, but then again, let not success get to your head. Do not just think about yourself; think about your country and your fellow countrymen as well.Jyoti Shrestha, VJ
Believe in yourself. There are many people who would want to pull you down, because that´s how the things work here. But if you stick to your aim you will definitely attain your goal.Deepak Maharjan, Boxer
Always follow what you are taught by your teachers and maintain the discipline, which is very important. Don´t lose hope just because you lost once. Keep trying until you succeed.Sadiccha Shrestha, Miss Nepal 2010
You should not be afraid of falling down and then standing up again. We make mistakes and people will criticize, but we can eventually make things right. Never lose hope and keep your head high.Sanjeev Maharjan, Visual Artist
We all learn from our mistakes and we all make mistakes so we don´t need to shy away. You just got to keep trying and something positive will definitely come your way. You need to have focus and faith in yourself and whatever you´re doing.
