Upakar Pandey and Anujeet Chudal were declared the winner of the painting competitions. Participants painted slogans and paintings depicting the urgency to protect wetland areas under the theme ‘Take Care of Water’ on large white cloths. ‘Take Care of Water’ is the official theme of World Wetland Day 2013 and 2013 is also the UN International Year for Water Cooperation.
The reason the organization chose this particular place for the program is because Nagdaha is a wetland rich in biodiversity and has religious and cultural importance for Nepalis people.
Santa Jirel, Yatra’s volunteer and event coordinator, said, “The main objective of the event is to raise public awareness on the values and benefits of wetlands and the Ramsar Convention.”
“I believe that this event has made local youths aware to act for environment conservation and protection for sustainable development,” said Surendra Shrestha, a member of Jana Marga Youth Club.
