KATHMANDU, Jan 6: A team of four lawyers led by Advocate Madhav Kumar Basnet filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday seeking an order to prevent the government from establishing Supreme Court benches in Biratnagar and Nepalgunj.

In the petition, Basnet argued that the government´s move would undermine the judiciary´s independence. So, the government plan to set up the benches should not be implemented.

The government, in its annual budget presented in September last year, had announced to establish SC benches in the Biratnagar in the east and Nepalgunj in the west. Currently, a government-formed committee is working on establishing the benches. The move has already been criticized by the legal community in the country. The apex court is holding its initial hearing on the petition on Wednesday.
