KATHMANDU, Sept 20: The government has claimed that people will have to face power cuts of up to 10 hours a day coming winter.

Last year people had to put up with 20 hours of loadshedding a day during the driest season. Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) had imposed 20 hours a day power cuts even when the public utility officially announced just 18 hours daily outage. [break]

“We will try and bring down the power cuts to 8-10 hours a day this winter,” Minister for Energy Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat claimed, adding, “This will be possible through upgrading and maintenance of our existing projects and thermal plants, 50-60 MW additional power import from India and generation of a further 50-100 MW through the establishment of another thermal plant with a German grant, among other options.”
