Midas CAN Info-Tech 2013 is concluding on Monday. Republica caught up with Amrit Pant, general secretary of Computer Association of Nepal (CAN), to talk about achievements of the event so far. Excerpts:

How is the event faring?

Considering the number of visitors and response from exhibitors, the event has become successful in achieving its objectives. I am assessing the achievement of Info-Tech from two aspects. First we got a Nepali company - Midas Technologies - as our title sponsor. It was a wonderful experience to work with Midas, as they were targeting awareness in e-Learning rather than selling their particular product. The second aspect is the huge response toward the event by decision makers. Political figures like former Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal and top bureaucrats like Chief Secretary Lila Mani Poudel and Nepal Rastra Bank Governor Dr Yuba Raj Khatiwada have visited the event. This is a big achivement.

This year the event looked managed and congestion-free. Is it because of few visitors?

If you compare our footfall figures, you find that the number of visitors this year has increased compared to last year. It is true that the event is more managed this year compared to last year. There is no hassle in ticket counters as we have arranged multiple ticket counters. We have also introduced online ticketing to facilitate our visitors. Besides, we are disseminating information about stalls through nLocate - a mobile application - and SMS service. This helped a lot in crowd management.

Do you think the event could have been made more organized?

Almost all the aspects of the event are good. But we are not satisfied with the venue. Looking at the growing number of visitors, we are in need of a bigger venue. Unfortunately, we don´t have any alternative to Bhrikutimandap at the moment.

Some exhibitors have complained about poor sales. Would you like to comment on it?

We have been telling the exhibitors that the major focus of the event is on promotion rather than sales. It is true that sales volume was higher some year ago because the focus then was on sales. From the last few years, we have shifted our focus to raising awareness and informing visitors about new innovations in ICT and their usage. I think exhibitors should not evaluate their participation in commercial terms. They should review the achievements in terms of brand promotion.
