Waste disposal halted following landfill site locals' protest

KATHMANDU, March 12: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) could not remove waste from the metropolis after the locals at the landfill site disrupted movement of garbage loaded vehicles in Sisdol of Nuwakot district.

The locals have disrupted garbage disposal in the landfill site after a child died when a vehicle loaded with waste knocked him down at Sisdol on Wednesday, said Chief of the Environment Management Division of the KMC Rabinman Shrestha. The locals torched and vandalized some vehicles in the landfill site following the incident. The damage to vehicles is over Rs. 30 million.The solid waste management activities have been affected following the incident but efforts are made to settle the problem holding talks with kin of the victim, he said.

Shrestha stressed on the need of finding the alternative to garbage management for people in Sisdol time and again created disturbances on the garbage management putting forth various demands.

Kathmandu produces around 500 metric tonnes of solid waste daily. The waste is piled up in different corners and roadsides in the KMC as the metropolis cleaners failed to remove the waste following the incident. RSS
