War of DJs begins

KATHMANDU, March 17: With Kathmandu slowly opening its wings to pub culture in town, the numbers of DJs (Disc Jockeys) in the capital are slowly mushrooming. Nevertheless, it is too early in town for DJs to depend solely on this career to earn their living. This scenario will change for better, promises TH (timrohamro.com), an event management company which started “War of DJs 2010”, a weekly reality show on Terai Television since March 11.[break]

Having already showcased three contestants out of 17 in its first episode last Thursday through Terai Television, the producers of the program are already geared up for its next episode, which is tomorrow night where another four contenders of the competition will showcase their technical skills in disc and their knowledge in music.

Ujjwal Tuladhar, one of the organizers shared, “While many think that a DJ career is still not at large, we’re trying to change the scenario. As we’re involved in hosting various kinds of events, we’ve closely encountered how the markets for DJs are opening in town. That is why we conceptualized this reality show so that we could provide a deserving space to the promising DJs in Nepal.”

War of DJs 2010 will go through next four months before it hosts its grand finale. Every episode will feature three to four DJs.

“Just spinning the decks and getting those hands will not make one win this competition. The jury needs to be astounded by the music they hear and the level of technical skill is equally important. They want to hear a sound that is fresh and original and that will be around for the next decade,” Tuladhar added.

All the seventeen participants will be judged by DJ Shishir, DJ BMAN, DJ Rupesh, DJ Salim, DJ Tenzing and DJ Sazz. The competition has entries across a variety of styles which include house, techno, hip-hop, trance and commercial.

Since the hip-hop music was slow last time, I could not mix up more than three songs. Anyway, I’ve given my best; so I hope for the best.
