'VIPs' get admitted to the hospital to evade detention

KATHMANDU, Feb 3: Industrialist Arun Chaudhary and Ajit Man Singh Thapa, the then CEO of the Bansbari Leather and Shoes Factory, who were arrested on Thursday in a land scam case, have been admitted to the hospital. They were admitted to the hospital late on Thursday.

After being arrested, these people suddenly fell ill and were admitted to the hospital. They were admitted to Chirayu Hospital in Basundhara as Thapa was reportedly suffering from heart problems and Chaudhary was suffering from sugar and pressure-related problems.

The Kathmandu District Court (KDC) has granted permission to authorities to detain them for four days and investigate but that is not likely to happen due to the dramatic twist within hours after their arrest. Arun Chaudhary and Ajitman Singh Thapa are the latest in the list of high-profile suspects who have been admitted to the hospital after their arrest.

Even before this, there were many cases where the accused in various cases and scandals were admitted to the hospital after being arrested. Most of them were ordered to be detained and investigated by the court. However, after they were arrested, they fell ill and were admitted to the hospital. In general, these people who were arrested pretended to be ill to evade detention.

Details of persons arrested in previous cases and were admitted to hospitals are as follows:

1) Former Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara was also admitted to Norvic Hospital a few days after his arrest, claiming that he had health problems. He stayed in a hospital cabin for 24 days to evade detention.

2) In the 2069 BS, Govinda Lal, who was arrested after making fake documents to get the contract of DDC, was admitted to Shanghai Hospital.

3) Krishna Das Giri 'Siddhababa', accused of rape, stayed in the hospital for a long time to evade police custody.

4) Actor Anmol KC was also admitted in Chirayu Hospital.

5) Former Member of Parliament Gayatri Shah, who was arrested on the charge of leaving a baby in the hospital, was also admitted to the hospital.

6) Min Bahadur Gurung, the owner of Bhatbhateni Super Store, was also admitted to the cabin of the TU Teaching Hospital for about 60 days to evade detention.

7) Prithvi Malla, who was drunk driving and killed Lila Devkota of Gorkha on December 13, 2019, was also admitted to Chirayu Hospital several times to evade detention.

8) Gauri Gyawali, who was in police custody on the charge of taking a loan of Rs 130 million from Siddhartha Development Bank by keeping a bad mortgage, was also admitted to the hospital.

9) Out of 25 gamblers who were arrested in 2078 BS with Rs 26.7 million cash, Pabitra Kumar Karki, Indra Bahadur Shrestha, Sohail Karki, Pawan Kumar Gupta, Shambhu Kumar Budathoki, Hom Prasad Chaulagain, Shrawan Kumar Goyal and Ranjan Rajbanshi were admitted to HAMS Hospital.

10) Chairman of Nepali Congress Dolakha, who was arrested on the day of Lakshmi Puja in 2078 BS, was admitted to Nepal Medical College in Jorpati to evade detention.

11) Dinesh Koirala of Dolakha Melu-1, who was arrested in 2076 BS on the charge of swindling Rs 700 million from the general public by showing temptation to not only get them jobs and send them abroad but also to open industries, also appeared in the court after staying in the hospital.

12) Chudamani Sharma, the then director general of the Inland Revenue Department, who was arrested on corruption charges, stayed in Bir Hospital and Norvic.

13) Sudhir Shah, Dharma Prasad Gautam, Siddhika Khetan and Kaladhar Deuja, who were arrested in connection with the Lalita Niwas case, were also admitted to the hospital.
