UML leaders made the announcement at a press meet organized at the party head office in Balkhu. CPN-UML has accused the Maoists of the murder, while the Maoists have denied the accusation. [break]
It has said the party´s sister wings will stage rallies, demonstrations and hold mass meetings, among other activities, across the nation from July 12 to July 19 to protest the killing.
“On July 20, all the district chapters will hold various programs to pay tributes to Karki in district headquarters,” UML said in its statement.
Top UML leaders including Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal will address the gatherings.
Prime Minister Nepal and Khanal will address the gathering in Kaski and Kathmandu respectively.
Other leaders KP Sharma Oli, Ishwar Pokharel, Pradip Gyawali, Bamdev Gautam, Bishnu Poudel, Shankar Pokharel, Surendra Pandey and Pradip Nepal will address the gathering in Jhapa, Okhaldhunga, Khotang, Dang, Baglung, Banke, Jumla and Solukhumbu respectively.
An unidentified masked gang on Thursday evening severely beat up Karki in Thulachhap VDC-4, Nishankhe while he was having dinner at local Tara Hotel. He died a few hours later while undergoing treatment at a community hospital in the district headquarters Okhaldhunga.
UML Sagarmatha Zonal Committee member Karki had contested general election in 2056 BS as UML candidate from number one constituency of Okhaldhunga.
Police intensify probe
Meanwhile, police in Okhaldhunga have intensified a manhunt for the murderers. DSP Ram Kripal Sah, police chief in the district, said the police are inching close to the culprits.
"Police investigation team is working effectively and it has uncovered many things. The only thing remains is to specify the individuals involved in the killing," he said.
Police have been interrogating hoteliers Purna Bahadur Tamang and Tara Tamang in this connection. "They are being interrogated just because they are eyewitness of the incident," Sah said.
Meanwhile, UML district chapter in Udayapur staged demonstrations Gaighat against the killing.
