KATHMANDU, Jan 10: Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) has conditionally agreed to Maoist proposal that its ex-Secretary General should chair the Constitutional Committee that he has refused to head, said a UML leader Saturday.
"The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) yet again proposed that our ex-General Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal should head the Constitutional Committee," said Bhim Acharya, a UML Central Committee member after a meeting with Maoist leaders at the latter Parliamentary Party office in Singh Durbar, Saturday. "But we will accept it only if Nepali Congress and Madhesi People´s Rights Forum do not object to the proposal." Nepal has refused to chair the body – that is to guide the constitution-drafting process – many times in public.
Acharya said that a UML CC meting later in the day would decide on the matter.
“Nepali Congress and Forum hopefully will not protest the decision,” said Dev Gurung, a Maoist leader and Law Minister. “We are confident that the UML will chair the Constitutional Committee.”
Meanwhile, a meeting between NC and the Maoist was over at Maoist Parliamentary Office at Singh Durbar after the two parties agreed to sit for another round of talks later in the afternoon.
