Uma`s sister-in-law among 7 arrested (Updated)

JANAKPUR, Jan 25: Police have so far arrested seven persons in connection with the January 11 murder of Janakpur-based journalist Uma Singh. Singh´s sister-in law Lalita Devi Singh was arrested Saturday. Deputy Superintendent of Police Yadav Raj Khanal said the seven arrested will be made public on Monday. [break]

Siraha police handed them over to Dhanusha district police after arresting them on the tipoff that Uma was murdered as a conspiracy hatched by Lalita.



Meanwhile, Uma´s mother Sushila Devi told journalists on the premises of the district police office here said Maoist cadres on the instructions by by Lalita Devi and her father killed Uma to capture her property.



Sushila said that she was frequently threatened by various individuals from the day she transferred the ownership some two katthas of land located at a local market some months back to Uma´s name. She added that her daughter-in-law and her father Baijnath Singh had been issuing threats to Sushila that the transfer of land´s ownership will cost them dear. She added that she had been living under terror ever since the land ownership transfer. “My daughter was killed solely for the property,” she grieved.



She also informed that Shrawan Yadav, a Maoist worker, and Umesh Yadav alias Swamiji Yadav, a member an armed tarai outfit, had frequently threatened her over the land issue. Police have arrested Shrawan Yadav while Umesh is absconding. Police arrested Neb Lal Paswan and Bimalesh Jha from Dhanusha in connection with the murder. Police arrested Lalita Devi, Jagat Yadav and Bindeshwar Sah from Dhanusha on Saturday after receiving information that Lalita Devi masterminded the killing.
