KATHMANDU, Nov 8: Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) is being closed for 10 hours daily starting today. All flights to and from the TIA will be closed for 10 hours as part of the airport's necessary maintenance drive.
According to TIA sources, the TIA will operate for only 14 hours a day for nearly 5 months. Starting today, all flights between 10 PM and 8 AM will be canceled. Previously, the TIA operated from 6 AM to 2 AM. Dipendra Shrestha, the director of the Air Traffic Capacity Enhancement Project under the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), stated that the closure is to ensure there are no safety risks to flight operations.
TIA to remain shut for 10 hours daily for repairs from today
The project will expand the parallel taxiway on the southwest side of the airport, the international apron on the north side, and the hangar apron on the east side of the TIA. The upgrade project is expected to cost Rs 15 billion.
A total of 19 aviation companies including 11 helicopter companies operate domestic flights, while 30 aviation service companies including three Nepali ones operate international flights. At TIA, there are over 300 domestic flights and around 100 international flights on a daily basis.
