KATHMANDU, August 20: The Mahantha Thakur-led People’s Socialist Party, (Nepal) renamed it as the Democratic Socialist Party on Friday.


Earlier on Thursday, the Thakur-led faction of Janata Samajbadi Party had filed an application at the Election Commission (EC) to register a new party named People’s Socialist Party, (Nepal).

However, there is a provision that the same name, flag and symbol cannot be used by two different political parties at the same time in Nepal.


The ‘party-split’ ordinance issued on Wednesday by President Bidya Devi Bhandari on Thursday paved the way for political parties to split the party if 20 percent of members of either the Central Committee or Parliamentary Party are in favor of it.
