ILAM, Feb. 9: Gorkha Janmukti Morcha called Darjeeling Banda from Wednesday after its two cadres were killed in police firing in Jalpaigudhi in India.[break]

The Morcha has been launching political movements demanding separate Gorkhaland State in Darjeeling for three years.

Following the banda, activities in Pashupatinagar Bazaar, the eastern border of Ilam district, have remained affected.

Darjeeling-bound tourists from Nepal through the border point have been returning back to Pashupatinagar due to the strike.

Bikki Lama of Dubers and Bimala Rai of Kalimpong, who were staging a relay sit-in protest at Nagrakata of the Indian district Jalpaigudi, were killed in police firing on Tuesday.

Lama and Rai were killed after the police recklessly opened fire while they were staging a peaceful agitation, said Morcha’s General Secratery Roshan Giri.

The local administration of Darjeeling has deployed police and paramilitary personnel from Monday following the complaints from Department of Forest that the agitators have encroached and erected tents for a sit-in protest at Chapramari Wildlife Reserve’s land.

Darjeeling has seen violence after the incident when Morcha’s cadres vandalized and set fire on different places in the district following the incident.
