POKHARA, Jan 26: The local administration in Pokhara has complained that they have been facing difficulty in removing street vendors from footpaths as they are backed by political parties.

Last Wednesday, street vendors affiliated to CPN (Maoist) reached the District Administration Office and Sub-metropolitan Office in Pokhara and submitted a protest note chanting slogans against the decision of removing them from footpaths. [break]“As the street vendors are backed by different political parties, we have been unable to remove them,” informed an officer at the Pokhara Sub-metropolitan Office.

The political parties been using street venders to show their strength, said an official at the sub-metropolitan office, adding, “We receive calls from locals leaders when we try to remove the street vendors from footpaths.”

The number of street vendors in Pokhara has crossed 3,000, said officials.
