Speaking at a workshop jointly organized by KOICA, KOICA Alumni Association (KAAN), UN Women and Nepal Republic Media in the capital on Tuesday, the stakeholders highlighted the role government, media and development partners need to play for a meaningful participation of women in the post-earthquake reconstruction phase.
Speaker of the parliament, Onsari Gharti Magar, said that effective implementation of the constitution can improve and upgrade the status of women in Nepal. "The constitution has guaranteed broad rights to women and its effective implementation can help upgrade their status by empowering them," said Magar. She claimed that development is not possible without engagement of women.
Likewise, Country Director of KOICA, Hyung Kyoo Kim, said that gender issue is a vital component of development procedure. "If we are not able to promote gender issues in our society, overall development of society is not possible," said he.
Hinting at the post-earthquake reconstruction phase of Nepal, he stressed the role of development partners like KOICA to make participation of women in rebuilding New Nepal. "Development partners can always work side-by-side with the government and simultaneously support the development process by engaging women."
Likewise, Ziad Sheikh, country representative of UN Women, opined that collective efforts from both the government and development partners could end violence against women and bring changes in the society.
"Unless we are able to eradicate the existing discriminatory social norms and practices in Nepal, inequality will remain. It is also equally important to ensure equal participation of female from school level to post-quake reconstruction works."
