St Xaviers' dethrones LA

KATHMANDU, Aug 31: St Xavier´s School lifted the team championship title of the Seventh LA/JTI Inter-school Junior Open Tennis Tournament on Saturday.



St Xavier´s scored a total of 81 points during the week-long event to dethrone the host Little Angels´, which has won all the previous editions of the junior tennis tournament.



The defending champion did not even make it to the top three as Nepal Police School (NPS) finished a distant second with 45 points while Shuvatara claimed the third position with 42 points.



Rato Bangala and Pennwood shared the fourth position with 30 points each while LA finished a disappointing fifth with 27 points.On Saturday, the final day of the tournament, Bibhuti Karki of St Xavier´s clinched the U-16 girls´ singles title defeating Mahika Rana 6-3, 6-1 in the final held at the court of LA in Hattiban, Lalitpur. In the boys´ singles of the same age group, Abhishek Bastola of Pokhara clinched gold defeating Avash Malla of Rato Bangala 6-3, 6-3 in straight sets.

Bastola also claimed another gold beating Milan Roka 6-2, 6-3 in the final of U-18 boys´ singles.

The U-12 boys´ singles final, featuring Samrakshak Bhushan Bajracharya and his brother Samyak, went to three sets. The elder brother, Samrakshak, survived a second-set wobble to prevail in the match with scores of 6-1, 4-6, 6-0.



Meanwhile, Ira Rawat of Pennwood struck gold in the U-12 girls´ singles category defeating Karuna Gauchan 7-6, 6-4 in the final.

Earlier in the tournament, Aki Juben Rawat (U-8 boys´ singles) of Pennwood and Isha Shree Shah (U-8 and U-9 girls´ singles) of St Xavier´s had won gold medals in their respective categories. Other gold medalists were Binaya Batas (U-9 boys´ singles) of NPS, Samyak Bhushan Bajracharya (U-10 boys´ singles) of Shuvatara, Abhilasha Bista (U-10 girls´ singles) of St Xavier´s, Samrakshak Bhushan Bajracharya (U-14 boys´ singles) of Shuvatara, Bibhuti Karki (U-14 girls´ singles) of St Xavier´s and Bijisha Shrestha (U-18 girls´ singles) of DAV.



All Nepal Lawn Tennis Association President Manoj Rana, Vice-president Jyoti Rana and Vice-principal of LA Rajesh Shrestha gave away the prizes to the winners.

Altogether 298 players had competed for 16 gold medals during the tournament.
