SPORTS BRIEFS: Shrestha wins NCC Chess

KATHMANDU, April 22: Veteran Rajendra Prasad Shrestha won the title of the First NCC Cup National Chess Tournament held in Dolakha on Thursday.



Keeping up his unbeaten run, Shrestha collected 7.5 points from the 10-round tournament. Keshav Shrestha with equal 7.5 points came second on the basis of progressive points. [break]



With seven points apiece Balaram Napit, Niraj Niraula, Madan Krishna Kayastha and FIDE Master Manish Hamal secured third to sixth positions. Similarly, Chudamani Bhattarai, Lawa Kumar Shrestha and Gyanendra Khaiju with equal 6.5 points occupied seventh to ninth spots.





Rato Bangala in basketball final



KATHMANDU, April 22: The girls´ team of Rato Bangala set up a final clash with Kantipur after thrashing Gaurishankar 29-6 on Thursday during the First Open Basketball Tournament.



Neharika Panta contributed 11 points for the winners.



In the boys´ category, Unique hammered Innovative 70-27 with the help of Bikash Gurung´s 22 points to enter the semifinals.



Likewise, Kantipur struggled past RIBS 43-40 in another match. Nirajan Gurung scored the highest 14 points for Kantipur.





Warriors enter final



KATHMANDU, April 22: Young Warriors entered the finals of the Marwadi Premier League T20 Spice Parshuram Trophy Cricket Tournament on Thursday. Warriors defeated Bikaner Blasters by 74 runs at the TU Cricket Grounds.



Blasters put Warriors into batting first after winning the toss. Blasters took Warriors´ two wickets very early but Subham Patodia (67 not out) and man-of-the-match Sumit Sharma (70 runs) steered Warriors to victory.



Warriors put up 170 runs losing three wickets in 20 overs and restricted Blasters to 96 runs in 19.1 overs. Ravi Sharma and Amol Sharma claimed three wickets each for the winning team.



Team Reebok will take on Black Stars in the next semifinal match at the TU grounds on Friday.
