SPORTS BRIEFS: Rana secures first position

KATHMANDU, April 17: Victory Shumsher Rana on Wednesday secured first position in the men´s singles of veterans´ above-65 years age category in the Second Citizens Bank Tennis Tournament being held in the capital. Rana defeated Singh Bahadur Basnet 9-7 in the final.



In the singles event of veterans´ above-35 years category, Sanu Lama, Karimul Muslim, Gauri Shankar Shrestha, Shree Ram Magar, Sunit Giri and Sukuman Tamang won their respective matches to book quarterfinal tickets. [break]



Similarly, Raju Shrestha, Krishna Raj Ghale, Deunav Lama, Harbinder Singh, Suwarna Dhakhwa, Soviet Man Shrestha and Pratap Moktan secured quarterfinal berths winning their respective matches while Gopa Das enjoyed a walkover.



In the above-55 years veterans´ doubles, Indrajit Rai and Ratna Bahadur Gurung´s pair advanced into the semifinals. Ashok Shakya and Mahadev Gurung´s pair, and Ashok Gurung and Dhruba Gurung´s pair received walkovers to reach the last four.



KCM basketball from Thursday



KATHMANDU
: The 8th Minsk KCM Basketball Bash 2013 is starting on Thursday at Kathmandu College of Management (KCM), Gwarko. The event will feature 16 teams in boys´ and eight teams in girls´ sections, the organizers said during a press conference held in the capital on Wednesday. The boys´ teams have been divided into four groups and the girls´ teams into two groups for the event to be held in league-cum-knockout format. The winner and runner-up of each group will advance into the knockout rounds. Similarly, 16 corporate teams will compete in a 3x3 knockout basketball tournament during the event.



The national wheelchair basketball team will play an exhibition match on the opening day. Prime College and Premier College are the defending champions in the boys´ and girls´ categories respectively. The event, which will run through May 3, is being organized by KCM´s Bachelor´s in Business Information System (BBIS) batch in coordination with the KCM Student Council and Sports Club of KCM. Minsk Drinking Water and e-sewa are the sponsors of the event.
