SPORTS BRIEFS: Nepal sets up title clash against India

KATHMANDU, Sept 14: Nepal on Friday set up title clash against India in the ongoing First South Asian Sepak Takraw Championship after both sides won their respective matches with ease at the covered hall of the Dasharath Stadium. Nepal defeated Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh with a score of 2-0 in all three matches. India also defeated the same opponents with the same scoreline in Friday´s matches. [break]



State honors physically challenged athlete



KATHMANDU
: The organizing committee of the National Children´s Day felicitated differently-abled athlete Pushpa Bhandari on Friday on the occasion of the Children´s Day. A press release issued by the National Sports Council states that the 13-year-old judo player with deformed legs was honored for her achievements at national and international competitions and for her courage to fight despite her disability. She had secured a silver medal in the First South Asian Cadet Judo Championship last year and had also won gold in the NeCOS All Nepal Judo Championship recently.



Purna Bahadur Khatri, president of the children´s home HOPAD which shelters Bhandari, said that such kind of honor by the state was a great encouragement for the children living in orphanages. Minister for Women, Children and Social Welfare Dinanath Sharma handed over the letter of appreciation to Bhandari amidst a function.



Lainchaur Dojo leads karate c´ship



KATHMANDU
: Host Lainchaur Dojo is leading the First Girija Prasad Koirala Memorial U-14 Junior and Cadet Shito-ryu Karate Championship on Friday with six golds. Priya Gurung (15 kg), Mandira Thapa (20 kg), Binita Shrestha (25 kg) and Anisha Tamang (30 kg) bagged golds for Lainchaur Dojo in the girls´ category, while Krishna Raj Joshi (15 kg) and Joraj Chalise (25 kg) secured golds in the boys´ section. Gothatar Dojo is trailing in the second position with two golds secured by Sudip Khadka (boys´ 30 kg) and Ayusha Shahi (girls´ 35 kg) in the tournament which is being held at the National Table Tennis Training Centre, Lainchaur.



HHCA, Forward Academy in final



KATHMANDU
: Himalayan Health Care Academy (HHCA) and Forward Academy advanced into the final of the Seventh Quicks Greenland Inter School Basketball Tournament on Friday in the senior boys´ section. HHCA edged past host Greenland ´A´ 40-37 while Forward Academy saw off Angel´s Heart 61-51 to secure their places in the final. In the junior boys´ section, Innovative and Odyssey won their respective matches to enter the final.
