SPORTS BRIEFS: NEA open with win

KATHMANDU, March 28: Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) opened the Second Inter-corporate Sports Tournament with a double victory on Monday.



In the opening match of the tournament, NEA beat Nepal Television followed by a victory over Nepal Airlines Corporation in volleyball league matches being held at Dasharath Stadium Covered Hall. [break]



In another match, Udayapur Cement defeated Employees Provident Fund while National Sports Council prevailed over Nepal Commercial Bank. Only volleyball matches were held in the opening day of the tournament.


Khalibari promoted to C division


KATHMANDU: Khalibari Football Club on Monday were promoted to C division as the winners of group A of the Martyrs Memorial C Division League qualifiers. Khalibari defeated BBC, Banepa 4-3 in tiebreaker after a 1-1 draw in regulation time. Subash Gurung, Raju Sunuwar, Anil Gurung and Himshail GC converted for Khalibari, while Rajesh Gurung hit wide. For BBC, Reckson Maharjan, Gopal Narayan Bhujel and Rabin Shrestha scored from the spot, while Sanjit Shrestha and Robin Shrestha were denied by Khalibari goalie. Earlier, Peace Gurung had put Khalibari ahead in the 38th minute but Sansar Nanda Palanchowke scored the equalizer in the 51st minute. In other matches of the day, Church Boys United thrashed Sinamangal Youth Alliance 4-0 and Jhamsikhel Youth Club beat Everest Football Club 1-0.


Chakravarti regains lead


KATHMANDU: Sudipt Chakravarti of India regained lead in the Second Ram Bir Shrestha Memorial FIDE Rating Chess Tournament on Monday. Despite the eighth round loss to Keshav Shrestha, Chakravarti regained the top spot with 7.5 points after defeating Navin Tandukar in the ninth round. Nepal champion Badri Lal Nepali climbed up to the second position with seven points defeating Deepak Maharjan and Keshav Shrestha. Navin Tandukar, Uttam Raj Thapa, Ganesh Man Duwal, Niraj Niraula, Rupesh Jaiswal, Rajan Puri and FIDE Master Manish Hamal share the third spot.
