KATHMANDU: Chelsea International, Pushpanjali and Nepal Don Bosco on Wednesday won their respective matches in the 16th National Friar Moron Memorial Invitational Football Tournament. In the matches played at St Xavier´s Godawari, Chelsea edged past Eden Garden 1-0 while Pushpanjali defeated Green Lawn Academy 2-0. Nepal Don Bosco beat LRI 4-2.
Host TIA in semis
KATHMANDU: Host TIA advanced into the semifinals of the ongoing ninth TIA Inter School Basketball Tournament on Wednesday in both boys´ and girls´ categories. TIA beat LRI 35-20 in the boys´ category while in the girls´ category TIA defeated Kastamandhap 25-11. In the other matches of the boys´ category, Valley Public, Oasis and Daffodil entered the semifinals. Valley Public thrashed Loyalty 41-22, Oasis overcame Gyan Niketan 42-31 and Daffodil overpowered Penwood 30-26. In the girls´ section, Mahendra Bhawan, Penwood and Daffodil also fixed the semifinal spots. Mahendra Bhawan thrashed New Summit 52-38, Penwood crushed Valley Public 28-15 and Daffodil edged past Angels Heart 27-25.
Tiger Tops Tigris continues winning streak
CHITWAN: Tiger Tops Tigris of Denmark continued its winning streak in the 30th International Elephant Polo Competition at Meghauli, Chitwan on Wednesday. Tigris beat Chitwan National Park 7-6 in the match played at Meghaouli Airport. Tiger Tops Nepal register a win against defending champion EFG of Switzerland by 7-4. In the third match of the day, WEPA Legend of Hong Kong beat Refty Khukuri of England 7-6. Likewise, Genghis Khan of Mongolia registered its first win in the tournament defeating Pukka Chukka of London 6-4.
Star Club climbs to third
KATHMANDU: Civil Mall Star Club on Wednesday climbed to third position registering its third victory in the Martyrs Memorial Red Bull B Division League at Nepal Police Academy, Maharajgunj.
Rajesh Kumar Das hit the decisive goal as Star defeated Mahabir Club 3-2. With the win Star garnered 10 points, while Mahabir remained pointless at the bottom of the table following its fifth defeat in a row.
Nirmal Dura had put Star ahead in the 17th minute but Santosh Kumar Rai scored the equalizer for Mahabir three minutes later. Anil Kumar Gurung scored Mahabir´s second goal in the 33rd minute to make it 2-1. However, Bimarsha Shrestha leveled the scores five minutes before the interval and Das hit home the decider in the 64th minute.
Earlier in the day, Kumari Yuva Club registered a 1-0 win over Gyan Bhairav Club riding on a lone goal from Ashish Thapa in the 72nd minute. Following the win, Kumari climbed to 11th position with five points while Gyan Bhairav lies in the 12th spot with four points.
ACC women´s U-19 in Kuwait
KATHMANDU: The third edition of ACC U-19 Women´s Championship will be held in Kuwait. According to Asian Cricket Council, the championship will be conducted in 25-over format from February 1-10. The participating teams have not yet been announced. Nepal is the winner of both the previous editions. Nepal had defeated Malaysia for the title in the first edition held in Thailand, and then defeated Bhutan in the 2010 final held in Singapore.
Nepali chess players end on high note
KATHMANDU: Nepali chess players on Wednesday ended the Second Asian Amateur Chess Tournament on a high note. Nepali veterans´ champion Rabindra Shakya defeated Shah Syed Iskandar in the ninth round of the tournament to earn six points from nine rounds.
Olympian Rajendra Prasad Shrestha beat Altaher Tarek Ali to take his tally to five points from nine rounds. Another Nepali player Badri Thaiba beat Mubarak Kaltham in the last round. Thaiba finished with four points from nine rounds. Nayan Ahmed Fadzil of Malaysia earned eight points from nine rounds to win the tournament. Altogether 110 players from eight countries had participated in the tournament.
