KATHMANDU, Jan 7: Inspector General of Police (JGP) Basanta Bahadur Kunwar has said that there has been a significant increase in cases of banking fraud and financial crimes. He said that a separate bureau is going to be established to investigate such incidents.

At the province-level crime investigation review conference held today in Pokhara, he said that homework has been carried out for the establishment of a specialized bureau to investigate financial crimes.

Recently, banking fraud and financial crimes have increased significantly. In Gandaki Province alone, such incidents have increased by 200 percent in the current fiscal year compared to the previous year, Kunwar reported. He said, "As financial crime incidents impact not only individuals or organizations but the entire national economy, the police headquarters is committed to addressing and controlling such incidents.”

Kunwar mentioned that challenges such as cyber-crimes, drug addiction, and social crimes are emerging alongside economic issues in society. Furthermore, he revealed that an action plan for drug control is being formulated and implemented at the district level.

“An initiative is being taken to establish a reform center under the leadership and management of the police. We are confident that all three levels of government will support this," he said.

He also said that as there is an increase in the influx of international travel from Nepal for purposes such as foreign employment, study, and tourism, it has heightened the risk of related crimes. Kunwar also stated that as Pokhara is a major tourist destination in the country, tourism-friendly services will be further expanded in Pokhara.
