KATHMANDU, June 1: The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) has formed a special committee to investigate issues faced by government hospitals.

Health Minister Pradeep Yadav initiated the formation of the three-member committee in response to persistent problems where patients are forced to wait a long time for treatment and years-long delays for surgeries in government hospitals.

On Friday, Minister Yadav appointed Additional Health Secretary Dr Dipendra Raman Singh as the coordinator of this committee. The committee is tasked with studying the problems and presenting a report with recommendations.

The study committee includes Dr Madan Kumar Upadhyay as a member, with Senior Public Health Administrator Dr Guna Nidhi Sharma serving as the member secretary.

Minister Yadav has directed the committee to submit a detailed report within two weeks. Initially, the committee will conduct on-site monitoring of federal hospitals within the Kathmandu Valley.

Minister Yadav emphasized that the committee was formed in response to the increasing number of complaints about long waits for surgery, delays in receiving treatment, and the overall inefficiency in federal hospitals.

During their investigation, the committee will examine various factors including the reasons for long surgical wait times, referral conditions, service quality and processes, the number of specialist doctors, and the specifics of the services they provide.

Additionally, the committee will conduct a thorough review of outpatient (OPD) services. This includes gathering data on the number of doctors attending OPD services, the daily patient count, referral status, and detailed information about laboratory and radiology services, including the number of patients referred elsewhere for these services.

The committee is also responsible for analyzing the number of patients, available manpower, resources, and other infrastructure in the hospitals. Based on their findings, they will submit suggestions for ensuring timely and quality delivery of health services.

Minister Yadav further instructed the committee to prepare and submit action plans for effective management of these problems, categorized into short-term (to be addressed within three months), mid-term (within one year), and long-term (within five years) solutions.
