The agreement was reached at the District Police Office in this eastern town. The agreement calls for action against policemen who used force to suppress the agitation, treatment of the injured and arresting the outsiders who manhandled agitating health workers.

The health workers launched the protest on Tuesday, demanding fulfillment of their 21-point demand.

However, no agreement has been reached yet about the demands. The management and the health workers will sit for talks on Thursday to discuss the 21-point demand.

On Wednesday, the situation at the National Medical College had turned tense after police allegedly used excessive force against agitating health workers at the college hospital on Wednesday.

The situation took a nasty turn when ´an outsider group´ interfered in a protest staged in front of the college by college staff. The group that came from outside the college had allegedly misbehaved with staffers staging a sit-in from 10 am as per their scheduled program. [break]

Sanjiv Yadav, the college unit chairman of All Nepal Health Workers´ Association, claimed that the outsiders were hired by the college management to thwart the ongoing agitation.

Locals also took to the street to protest against the ouside intervention in the health workers´ demonstration. Superintendent of Police Subodh Ghimire said police had to fire one round in the air to disperse the crowd.

Patients undergoing treatment at the hospital faced difficulties as the nurses took to the street. The college management has deputed students studying at the medical college for medication work for the time being.

People bringing patients to the hospital have started shifting them as the situation there turned tense.

The agitating health workers accused the police of using excessive force on peaceful demonstrators. They raised slogans against the college management and the police.

Health worker Pampha Giri said policemen misbehaved towards and indiscriminately beat up female medical workers instead of using women police.
