KATHMANDU, Dec 23: As soon as you enter the sitting area of Tamarind, a new, chic addition to the Jhamshikel lane at Patan, you begin to feel good. It does not take long to discover the reason. High ceilings, spacious outlook and minimal settings contribute to the comfortable thoughts. The restaurant does not have pompous designs and cluttered décor and, therefore, offers no distractions from your food and company.[break]

Tamarind can be a new delight to pescatarians. "Now, one does not always have to head toward Thamel´s hustle and bustle or to Lazimpat to enjoy sea food," says Nabin Thapa, one of the owners of Tamarind. Though the priority has been given to sea-food, the menu also includes continental, Thai, Chinese and Italian cuisines. "It can get difficult to survive only on a limited menu these days," adds Nabin.

A venture of four friends--Nabin, Manish Shrestha, Kishor Pradhan and Chabin Shrestha--who share passion for food, Tamarind boasts of sitting capacity for 110 people. Manish says the restaurant will soon have a live band perform every Friday.

Manish informs that the menu is yet to take a complete shape. For now, the menu includes starters to full meal with price ranging from Rs 160 for French fries to Rs 990 for tiger prawns. The restaurant already has a steady flow of people in the afternoon trickling in for a quick bite.

Chef Ajay Kumar Pudasani recommends roasted wild boar for the starters and shrimp with salmon from the special menu which when presented garnished with a club of green leaves looked more of an art than dish. Rounding up the list was goat cheese salad and duck breast basted with orange sauce. Sea food lovers don´t have to lose heart, as the soup bar also offers sea food soup.

"We have focused on service along with the food as restaurants here are pretty lousy when it comes to service," informs Manish. Clad in black trousers and sweater teamed up with light blue shirt, the waiters are seen moving swiftly to serve and take orders. Dressed up in a similar ensemble, bar tender Krishna Lama informs that for summer there will be more of a ginger based mocktails to soothe the hot afternoons away.

As for now, Leechi Mojito, Tamarind Punch and Crazy Coconut are the recommended drinks. Leechi Mojito has already become favorite among regular customers. A tinge of mint does not let the leechi´s sweetness overwhelm your taste buds.

Along with the casual lounge accompanied by a bar, the eatery also has a separate fine dining area and a coffee bar. The concept of fine dining can be intimidating for many, but Tamarind has taken special care to give a casual air to the dining area for a comfortable feel. Utilizing the space, tall chairs accompanied by tables are strategically placed just outside the spacious sitting lounge. A table for two can be a perfect setting for a cup of coffee or a light brunch.

Winter sun is always tempting. And with its garden, Tamarind offers a space to enjoy the food along with the winter sun. As for brighter days, there are always patio umbrellas.

Opening hours: 7:30 am till 10:30 pm.
